Documents You Need to File Your ITR
Filing your income tax return is far easier when your paperwork is ready in advance. Gathering everything up front helps avoid errors, missed deductions and last-minute stress. Here is what to keep handy.
Identity & basics
- PAN and Aadhaar
- Bank account details (with IFSC) for all active accounts
- Last year’s return or computation, if available
Income proofs
- Form 16 from your employer(s)
- Form 16A / 16B / 16C for TDS on other income
- Interest certificates from banks (savings, FDs, RDs)
- Capital gains statements for shares, mutual funds or property
- Rental income details, if any
- A summary of business or professional income, if applicable
Deductions & tax credits
- Section 80C proofs (LIC, PPF, ELSS, tuition fees, home-loan principal)
- Section 80D health insurance premium receipts
- Home-loan interest certificate (Section 24)
- Donation receipts (Section 80G)
- Form 26AS / AIS / TIS to reconcile your tax credits
- Advance tax or self-assessment tax challans
A quick tip
Always reconcile the TDS shown in your Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement (AIS) with your own records before filing. Mismatches are one of the most common reasons for notices later.
